Introvert house for extravert family
Year: 2018
Location: Kryvorivnia, Ukraine
Area: 160m2
Program: Residential
Located in the Carpathian Mountains in Western Ukraine, Kryvorivnia has been a historical meeting place for the Ukrainian intelligentsia. Its unique landscapes and Hutsul culture have inspired many artists, writers, and filmmakers throughout the centuries. The traditional Hutsul house, hata grazhda, is a structure organized around a central shared space, opaque on the outside and open towards the central courtyard.
In our design for the family residence, the plan is reversed: it is blind outwards and alive inwards. The outer perimeter supports the needs of the rooms; the inner perimeter relates, mediates, transitions and illuminates the spaces, around and within, protected and open, dark and bright.
